How to Build a Yard Drain System with No Slope
Dealing with standing water in a flat yard can be frustrating
—but even if your property has no natural slope, you can still install an effective drainage system. Here's how to build a yard drain system that works on level ground:
1. Use a Catch Basin or Surface Drain
Start by installing one or more catch basins or surface drains in the low spots where water collects. These act as collection points to capture runoff before it can pool.
2. Install Solid or Perforated Drain Pipes
Connect the catch basins to drainage pipes—either solid or perforated depending on soil conditions. If the soil drains poorly, use perforated pipe wrapped in landscape fabric and gravel to encourage absorption.
3. Create a Sump Basin and Pump System
Since gravity won’t do the work, install a sump basin at the lowest point of the system. Inside it, place a sump pump designed for outdoor use. This pump will push the collected water to a suitable discharge location (street curb, storm drain, or dry well).
4. Choose a Discharge Point
The pump should move water to an area where it can safely drain away from your property. Be sure to follow local codes when selecting your discharge location.
5. Maintain the System
Clear out debris from grates and test the pump regularly—especially before rainy seasons. A well-maintained system will keep your yard dry and your foundation safe.
